Reading Group Guide

1. The characters in WISH YOU WERE HERE all read a number of books whilst on holiday. What books have you taken on holiday? Do you pick a specific type of book to take on holiday compared to your normal read?

2. Which main character did you identify with the most? If you had to pick one of them to go on holiday with you - who would you pick and why?

3. Have you ever been on holiday with a group of friends? If so, how did you enjoy the experience compared to a family holiday? Are they better or worse?

4. In the story, all the characters are running away from their problems. Can anyone really leave their problems at home when they go on holiday or is this just wishful thinking? Who seems to escape the most and why?

5. Charlie and Lisa are drawn together over the course of the holiday. Why do you think this is? What do they have in common?

6. Were your views on Charlie and Lisa’s relationship affected by the fact that Tom had just broken up with his long term girlfriend and Andy had been trying to cheat on Lisa?

7. Do you think betraying a friend for a lover is ever acceptable?

8. Which of the main characters do you think does the most ‘growing up’ over the course of the story? Who goes on the longest journey and why?

9. What did you think of the ending? If you had to write a sequel for the book, what new plots would you dream up for the main characters?
